The Pocket Knife at Wal-Mart Story

I’m a little disturbed by all of the folks out there that seem to be so distressed by men who desire to be men. Call it what you will, but I believe God made men masculine for a purpose. Why is it that our current society is offended by this?

Masculinity does not mean arrogant, over-bearing, uncaring, rude, obnoxious or any of these negative thing. Masculinity is what a man is. A man is a gentleman, he is emotional without being artificial, he loves nature, he loves life, he treasures his wife and his family, he raises his children with a firm hand but loving mind, he cherishes his country and what it stands for and so much more.

I shake my head at seeing the direction that our culture is going when it comes to being a man. It is as if men are looked down upon for what they are. Men are scorned and snorted at because they are “crude” and “unrefined”. It appears that an overwhelming amount of folks in our culture want to see men feminized.

Why am I on this rant? Well, I was at Wal-Mart the other day. In the process of looking through some of the fishing lures in the sporting goods section, I noticed a string dangling from my shirt sleeve. Now, I was a soldier earlier on and years of brain-washing has taught me that this string must be removed. So, I looked around to make sure the coast was clear, removed my pocket knife, and simply cut the string loose.

Now, what happened next was more funny than anything. This lady and her two kiddos come around the corner. There I am, knife in hand. Well, I just smiled and said hello. She looked at me like I was some kind of mass murderer. She grabbed the closest kid and pulled him close. I guess she was panicked, because after a second or two, she seemed to relax.

The next stage for this lady was a weird sort of anger. She glared at me like she could burn a hole through my forehead with some sort of ticked-off-lady laser vision. Then, she let out some sort of weird snort and stated, “I should call the police! A knife, in Wal-mart! Who do you think you are, macho-man?”

I really didn’t know what to say, so I didn’t say anything. The lady stormed past me and let out another one of those weird snorts. I was very puzzled by this whole thing and to be honest, I was kind of embarrassed at first. I don’t like to scare people.

The more I got to thinking about it, the more I laughed to myself. First, she was upset because I had a knife in Wal-Mart. The funny thing is; Wal-Mart sells knives.Feminization of Men

She was obviously upset about the fact that I had a knife that I carried, in public. Why I wonder? I’m sure she could carry one as well if she wished.

And then she called me macho-man while snorting like some kind of mule deer. Macho-man; I don’t recall putting on any macho demonstrations. I assume that the owning of a pocket knife makes a man macho in this lady’s mind. And, with all that snorting, I can rightly assume that she doesn’t like macho-men. Oh well. I never really thought of myself as macho.

Anyway, that’s my story. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I think our culture is disgusted with the masculine man. I think it’s pitiful and quite silly to be honest.

I sure would like to hear some thoughts on the feminization of men.

I agree with you. I think for the last 25 years or so the feminization of men has been been a plague to our country. I think most of it started in the media, especially on TV. It seems like most shows have the men portrayed as not having even half a brain, and without the wives to tell them what to do and how to do it they couldn’t tie their own shoes. Plus, they have to be super-sensitive and if they do anything considered “manly,” it’s a waste of time and looked down on as barbaric. I carry a knife everywhere I go because you never know what you may need it for. Several times my friends have asked me why I carry one, in a tone that is both inquisitive and a little angry. It’s as if they think having a knife is some sort of crime. What they don’t stop to consider is that 100 years ago you’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t carry one!
